Alaba traders nabbed for piracy

Two traders at Alaba International Market, Lagos State have been arrested by the police for engaging in piracy.
Those arrested by the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police are Andy Johnson and Ezenwaka V. Chukwuma.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the SFU, Ngozi Isintume-Agu, the suspects were arrested based on a petition by Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited.
Isintume-Agu said Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited, the provider of encrypted multi-channel satellite television service known as DSTV, alleged that some individuals engaged in importing, selling and distributing illicit devices capable of illegally accessing their broadcast signals to unsuspecting members of the public.
The suspects were alleged to have set up contrived equipment to act as gateways, which facilitated illegal access by the non MCN devices to DSTV (signal) broadcast signals.
The statement by Isintume-Agu added that detectives not only arrested Johnson and Chukwuka but also seized some items suspected to have been used in pirating the intellectual property were recovered as exhibits.
Johnson is said to be a 28-year-old apprentice from Abia State.
He was arrested in Shop No. “F” 1377 and the items recovered from him are one strong decoder, 16 open boxes and one UPS.
Chukwuka is 42 years old and hails from Anambra State.
He claimed to be a technician who repairs TVs, LCDs, DVD.
He is the owner of Shop No. “73”.
The items recovered from him were Avatars and Spider, which according to him, were receivers for free to air transmission.
Also, laptop and desktop computers were recovered.
Isintume-Agu said investigation is ongoing and the suspects would be charged to court soon.
