AIG warns policemen against extra judicial killings

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 10, Bala Hassan, has warned police personnel in the zone against extra judicial killings.
Hassan gave the warning on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi while addressing officers and men of the Kebbi State Police Command.
He said: “It is mandatory for the police to uphold that the law prohibits officers and men to assault suspects, to extract confessional statements or killing of an armed robber who pleaded guilty.
“The court is the only authority assigned to give sentences, punishments on criminals and I must stress that the easiest way for policemen to lose their jobs is to be guilty of any form of extra judicial killings.
“I therefore advise you to conduct exhaustive investigation and report to the court for judgement.”
Hassan commended the Kebbi State Police Command for the low crime rate in the state and urged the personnel to sustain the trend.
He also urged them to re-dedicate themselves to duty, shun bribery and corruption and be diligent in the conduct of their duties.
The AIG advised police personnel under the command to take advantage of the courses offered by the Open University of Nigeria to upgrade their educational qualifications.
In a remark, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Benjamin Onwuka, said that the 4,425 policemen currently serving in the state were inadequate for effective policing.
Onwuka commended the cordial relationship existing among the command, the state government and the public, which had aided them in their duties.
He, however, requested for more patrol vehicles and communication gadgets, fencing of divisional police stations and provision of more office accommodation for efficient performance.
