A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George, has said that age was no longer on his side for him to lead the party as National Chairman.
The former Military Administrator of Ondo State said this in Lagos when he spoke with newsmen in his office.
He spoke against the backdrop of his call for the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, Iyorcha Ayu.
He had called for the resignation of Ayu following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the party for the 2023 elections, saying both positions can’t be held by Northerners at the same time.
He said there are six positions that must alternate three apiece between the North and the South as enshrined in the zoning policy of the party.
The positions are President, Vice President, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and National Chairman of the party.
When then pressed further to know if he still has interest in the national chairmanship, a position he once eyed, George said: “Age is not on my side now.
“At the time I wanted it, I had learnt the ropes and experience.
“Now age not on my side.
“There is a time for everything.
“For me?
“No.
“I am an elder.
“That is the stage I am now.
“I am never afraid to speak truth to power.
“Ayu said once the presidential candidate emerged from the North, he will resign.
“Why are you now trying to reverse the role?
“Your word must be your bond.”
