AC Milan have confirmed striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered a calf injury on Monday and will be examined again in 10 days.
There were reports that the 38-year-old had ruptured his Achilles tendon, an injury which could have brought an end to his long career in the game with his Milan contract set to expire in the summer after he signed a short-term deal in January.
However, medical tests on Tuesday revealed good news, with the injury affecting his calf and no damage to the Achilles.
A Milan statement read: “Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered an injury to the soleus muscle of his right calf.
“The Achilles tendon is perfectly intact. An examination will be carried out in 10 days.”
Ibrahimovic has managed four goals since re-joining the Italians following the end of his contract with LA Galaxy.
His future at the San Siro was already up in the air with Bologna manager Sinisa Mihajlovic claiming he would leave the club at the end of his deal.
Mihajlovic suggested the forward could join him at Bologna or return to his native Sweden.
Ibrahimovic returned home to train with with Hammarby, the Stockholm-based club in which he bought a nearly 25 per cent stake last year, to keep up his fitness while Italy was under lockdown.
He was forced to spend time in self-isolation upon his return to the country and has given little away about his future.
