A retired Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Tsav, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to intervene by drafting a special police squad to curb the incessant killings in Benue State.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Makurdi, Tsav regretted that the state had become so insecure that residents were living perpetually in fear of attacks.
He regretted that in the last one month, more than 20 people had been killed by unknown gunmen in the Katsina-Ala/Ukum axis and claimed that those killed were mostly members of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Tsav said the intervention of the IGP was imperative owing to the inability of the police command to track down the killers and guarantee safety of lives and property in the state.
He traced the history of illegal acquisition of arms in the state to 1999 when thuggery was emboldened by politicians to suppress opposition parties in the state.
According to him, the amnesty programme being proposed by Governor Samuel Ortom is just a ruse and not the solution to the problem.
