The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission on Wednesday night released the four-month-old result of the last local government election for Langtang North Local Government Area of the state.
The February 25, 2014 local government election in Plateau State was adjudged to be peaceful, but PLASIEC declared the result of the election in Jat Ward in Langtang North Local Government Area as inconclusive.
It then fixed March 3, 2014 for the re-run.
The Eagle Online, which has been following the situation report in the area, gathered that the result was also seen as a determinant of who will emerge as the local government chairman.
Addressing journalists at the PLASIEC secretariat on Wednesday night, the Chairman of the commission, Peter Dalyop, said as the election processes were ongoing, one of the political parties instituted a court case and secured an injunction restraining the commission from conducting the re-run.
Dalyop explained further: “The court case, which had been ongoing, came to a conclusion on the 30th June, 2014 with the ruling of the presiding judge.
“After obtaining the ruling, PLASIEC sought the interpretation and legal advice of the state Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney General of the state in order to guide us for necessary action.
“In line with the advice obtained, PLASIEC hereby recognises the results of Jat Ward earlier brought directly to the headquarters by the ward supervisor.”
Dalyop said from the result there indicated that the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Amos Raman, won the councillorship seat.
Raman polled 2,225 votes against that of his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 2,065 votes.
The position of chairman was won by Godwin Kumzhi of the PDP, who scored 21,863 votes against that of his closest rival from the Democratic Peoples Party, who polled 21,848.
