The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says its Benin Zonal Office has arrested one Anthony Ojemolon for attempting to obtain money by false pretences and impersonating officials of the commission.
The Spokesperson of the commission, Dele Oyewale, said that Ojemolon, 47, who claimed to be a builder based in Lagos State, was arrested on Wednesday in Edo State.
He said the suspect during a visit to his hometown, Ekpoma in Edo State, discovered that one Ehimen Peter, a Libya returnee, suddenly became rich and decided to defraud him.
Oyewale quoted Ojemolon as saying: “I was in my village where I met some people discussing about Peter, aka Senator, that he had hammered and I asked for his mobile number and decided to call him.
“I wanted to take my own share.
“So I told him to bring N1.5 million to settle people in EFCC who are looking for him and N150,000 for myself.”
Oyewale added that the potential victim said when he received the call, he was shocked as he did not have such money.
According to Peter, it was when Ojemolon began to put pressure on him to bring the money that he confided in his elder brother who advised him to petition the EFCC.
Oyewale said: “Upon receiving the petition, the commission advised Peter to play along which consequently led to the arrest of Ojemolon by operatives of the commission at the point where he wanted to collect the money from Peter.
“Ojemolon has made useful statements and will be arraigned in court soon.”
