A former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Association, Hon. Sani Toro, has called on the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, to ensure that the National Sports Commission Bill is passed into law during his tenure.
Toro told Abdullahi that this would give the Commission full statutory powers under the Nigerian laws, which, according to him, would be one of the high points of his achievements in office.
Toro said: “Interestingly too, the Minister is working hard to ensure that the National Sports Commission Bill is passed into Law.
“I want to sincerely urge the National Assembly to make it a priority to be able to empower the NSC to function properly.
“If passed, it is going to be a huge achievement for the Honourable Minister this happened during his tenure.”
Toro also showered encomiums on the Minister for all the innovations he has introduced to sports since he took over and importantly ensuring peace and cordiality reigned supreme between the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation and also between the NSC and the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
He said: “The first good thing the Sports Minister was able to achieve is the peace he has brought to football in the country.
“The feuding parties have amicably resolved their frictions through the timely intervention of the minister.
“Secondly, the Minister of Sports has been able to convince his counterpart in the Ministry of Education to be actively involved in sports through school sports that has been the major provider of athletes in the past.
“He was also able to present the involvement of the Ministry of Education in sports at the Federal Executive Council, which was unanimously backed and approved by President Goodluck Jonathan.
“It is also on record that not only did he set up a strong committee to find a lasting solution to reviving sports in the country, it is also during his tenure as a serving Sports Minister that the Retreat on Sports by President Goodluck Jonathan was held.
“This shows that the Federal Government is now keenly interested in sports and this will definitely boosts sports development in the country.”
