As the nation marks Democracy Day on Wednesday, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, of behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force has congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan, the Government and people of Nigeria.
To ensure a secure, peaceful and hitch-free nationwide anniversary celebration, the IGP has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors General and State Command Commissioners of Police to ensure effective and efficient deployment of all operational manpower and tools at the disposal of their respective Commands.
According to the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, Abubakar has further directed the AIG Border Patrol to ensure that the nation’s borders are effectively manned to prevent any cross-border crime.
The AIG Air-Wing has also been directed to provide aerial patrol for the FCT and other states.
Mba said in the statement: “While saluting the courage and gallantry of officers and men of the Force, in protecting the nation’s thriving democracy, the IGP charges Police personnel to continue to subordinate themselves to civil authority and give maximum respect to the fundamental rights of the citizenry.
“He advises officers to remain politically neutral and steer clear of partisan politics in line with the professional ethics of the Force. He warns that officers found meddling in local politics within or outside their areas of jurisdiction will be appropriately sanctioned.”
Mohammed equally pledged “the unalloyed loyalty of the Nigeria Police Force to the Government and people of Nigeria”.
He also promised that the Force would continue to do everything within its power and available resources, including partnering with relevant stakeholders, to effectively discharge its constitutional and statutory responsibilities of securing lives and property of Nigerians, even in the face of current security challenges and the huge price involved.
Mba stated further that the IGP restated the commitment of the current police under his watch to reposition the Force for greater efficiency, and called for the cooperation of all citizens in these regards.
