Education: Kaduna earmarks N23.2b for capital projects in 2019

The Kaduna State Government has earmarked N23.2 billion in its 2019 budget for execution of capital projects in the education sector.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the figure is part of the 2019 proposed budget obtained from the state’s Planning and Budget Commission, on Friday.
The proposed budget currently before the state house of assembly however indicates that the amount is N9.7 billion lower than the N33 billion allocated to the sector in 2018.
A breakdown of the figure shows that N12.1 billion would go to ministry of education science and technology and N5.9 billion would go to the State Universal Basic Education.
The budget also provides that N4.04 billion would go to Kaduna State University, N529.1 million to Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya and N428.3 million to Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic Zaria.
Also, N192.7 million is allocated to the Library Board, while N1.9 million goes to Kaduna State Scholarship Board.
According to the document, the education ministry is expected to spend N8.8 billion on primary and secondary school rehabilitation and provision of equipment and N1.9 billion on Global Partnership for Education.
N1.1 billion will go into development of web portal for ICT services and multimedia/video conference centre, while N7.2 million will be spent on development of three computer-based test centres ; one in each senatorial district.
A total of N200 million is equally earmarked for Teacher Development Programme, a DFID joint project, and N152.1 million for fencing of government-owned institutions.
It said: “The construction of six science secondary schools, with support from Islamic Development Bank would gulp N57.4 million.
“Provision of school uniforms for students across the state got N27.3 million, while N75.9 million would supply of furniture to secondary schools across the state.
“Similarly, N731 million was earmarked for interventions to improve the nutrition of primary school pupils, Islammiya and Quranic education boarding school pupils, 31 boarding secondary schools.
“Supply and installation of LPG tanks, burners and industrial boiling pans in 29 boarding secondary schools got N37.3 million.”
