The Abia State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over lingering legal tussles around the state’s governorship seat, saying that the situation had negated growth.
“The lingering legal disputes constitute a huge drawback to our desire to forge ahead; they keep drawing us backward,” the chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Agomoh, said on Thursday in Umuahia.
Agomoh expressed the opinion during a one-day prayer programme tagged: “Solemn Assembly,” organised by the association to pray for God’s interventions in the challenges facing the state.
He described the situation as “saddening”, saying that the money used for such legal battles could be used to construct 10 roads every year.
He said: “But they prefer to give it (money) to lawyers.
“We do not want this anymore in Abia.
“From tomorrow (Friday, March 12), let God choose a leader for Abia.”
The Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia, Dr. Chibuzo Opoko, in his speech, said the programme was organised to seek God’s divine intervention concerning the political situation in Abia State.
“God’s divine intervention will yield peace, stability, progress, focus and purposefulness that will make Abia a land of growth and opportunities,” Opoko said.
He explained that CAN was a non-partisan body only interested in the socioeconomic development of the state.
Opoko, who spoke on yet another Supreme Court judgement on the Abia State governorship seat slated for Friday (today), prayed for God’s intervention so that the state would be politically stable.
“We are sick and tired of legal distractions which force incumbent governors to lose concentration,” Opoko added.
