The National Open University of Nigeria on Wednesday said some prison inmates would be graduating alongside other students during the institution’s forthcoming 5th convocation ceremony in Abuja.
The university’s Director of Media and Information, Dr. Ronke Ogunmakin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Ogunmakin, however, did not give the actual number of inmates that would be graduating.
She said: “Plans for the fifth convocation, coming up in Abuja on January 16, have been concluded.
“We shall be conferring degrees on some inmates who have successfully completed their courses and have satisfied all requirements.
“However, I cannot categorically say how many of these inmates will be so honoured because I am yet to get the final breakdown of graduating students.
“But all I can assure you is that we shall be graduating some inmates.
“We are looking forward to a successful outing.
“By the grace of God, everything that we have lined up to do to ensure a hitch-free ceremony is fully on course.”
NAN reports that three inmates, one from the Enugu Prisons and two from the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons in Lagos, were among 7,000 NOUN students that graduated during the 4th convocation in 2015.
One of the inmates was conferred with a Bachelor’s Degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution.
