The General Overseer Worldwide of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has reacted to his reported endorsement of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Recall that Pastor Adeboye and the former two-term Lagos State Governor met behind closed doors on Tuesday.
Reports after the meeting had it that Adeboye endorsed Tinubu for the 2023 presidential election despite flying a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Also recall that Tinubu had chosen a former Governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shettima, as his running mate.
He had defended his choice as the best for the country, adding that even in his house, he has not shown disdain for any religion, as his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a Christian and pastor of the RCCG.
Reacting to the reports on the outcome of the meeting between Adeboye and Tinubu, the RCCG in a statement denied that its General Overseer endorsed the National Leader of the APC.
In the disclaimer, the Church said Adeboye is under the authority of the Christian Association of Nigeria and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and as such would not speak on behalf of Christians on issues regarding policies.
The church said: “It has come to our notice that some news outlets are reporting that a meeting between the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Worldwide and the former Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu was held a few days back at the Redemption Camp where our esteemed father in the Lord was said to have supported the preferred candidature of the Party the former governor is a member of.
“This is to inform the general public that Pastor Adeboye is under the authority of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and as such will not speak on behalf of Christians on issues regarding policies.
“Pastor Adeboye and the RCCG have not and will not endorse any candidate for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. The news reported by Daily Post is false. Daily Post and other news outlets should desist from spreading false information about Pastor Adeboye and the RCCG as it defeats the code of ethics of journalism and the full weight of the law will be employed if such happens in the future.”
