Favour Agboro missed the chance to clinch Nigeria’s first medal at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia in the men’s weightlifting event on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 62kg final standings saw Agboro finishing fifth in a field of 14 contestants after a total lift of 268kg.
He lifted an impressive 112kg in the snatch and 156kg in the clean and jerk.
The gold medal was won by Muhammad Bidin of Malaysia who lifted 126kg in the snatch and 162kg in the clean and jerk for a total lift of 288kg.
Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea claimed silver with a lift of 286kg, while the bronze medal was won by Talha Talib of Pakistan who did 283kg.
Earlier on Thursday, Monica Uweh of Nigeria finished in fifth position in the women’s 48kg category of the weightlifting event.
Chanu Saikhom of India won the gold medal, Marie Ranaivosoa of Mauritius got the silver and Dinusha Gomes of Sri Lanka claimed the bronze.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games, which is its 21st edition, got underway at Gold Coast in Australia with a colorful opening ceremony on Wednesday and it is expected to end on April 15.
