About two hundred women between the ages of 18 and 65 have benefitted from free cervical cancer screening programme organised by the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria.
At the flag-off of the two day screening in Ibadan, the Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, Prof. Dawud Noibi, said the organization had initiated several programmes aimed at improving the conditions of the people both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Represented by MUSWEN’s Deputy Chairman, Secretariat Task Force, Alhaji Murziq Siyanbade, Noibi explained that the screening for cervical cancer was expensive hence the need to organise the programme for the benefit of the common people.
The MUSWEN executive secretary said the fact that cancer of all shades has now become a major global health issue, the significance of the screening exercise cannot be over emphasised.
“More importantly, the ravaging effect of cervical cancer on the wellbeing of women in contemporary time is alarming,” he said.
Quoting the Wikipedia, he disclosed that over 266,000 cases of cervical cancer led to death.
The Chairman, MUSWEN’s Heath Committee, Prof. Muheez Durosinmi of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, Osun State, said cervical cancer was the second-most common cause of female-specific cancer after breast cancer, stressing that early detection might not lead to death.
He corrected the wrong impression that the decease has no cure, saying it is a common disease and that not all has no cure.
Durosinmi appealed to any of the beneficiaries who tested positive to come back as the organization had provision for free treatment of the disease.
Some of the beneficiaries lauded the organization for the initiative which would enhance prevention and early detection of cervical cancer.
