1.7m kg mails passed through Nigerian airports in 2013

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria said on Tuesday that 1.7 million kg of mails passed through the nation’s airports in the third quarter of 2013.
Yakubu Dati, the General Manager, Public Communications of FAAN, made this known to aviation correspondents at the Murtala Muhammed Airport at Ikeja in Lagos.
Dati said that a total of 1,718,481,34 kilogrammes of mails were carried in the third quarter of 2013, as compared with 1,133,486 kilogrammes in the third quarter of 2012.
The FAAN general manager noted that the investment in the transformation of the airports had increased the growth in mail movement across the country.
“This transformation has led to the reliance of courier companies on air transport, which is a safer and faster means of transportation,” he said.
Dati said that 52 million kg of cargo also passed through the airports in the third quarter of 2013, as against 43 million in the third quarter of 2012.
He said that the figure signified a 20 per cent growth of cargo in 2013.
Dati said that the concept of designating the airports was to facilitate the exportation of agricultural produce and other perishable goods in the country.
