With the results of just five more states to go in the presidential election, the incumbent and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is trailing by about 2.9 million votes.
Jonathan’s main challenger and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari, opened the gap with the announcement of the results from 15 more states by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday.
As at the wee hours of Tuesday, INEC had only released the results from 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
While Jonathan took eight states and the FCT, Buhari won in 10 states and had a lead of over two million votes.
The five states where results are being expected when the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, resumes the announcement of results are Borno, Taraba, Sokoto, Edo and Delta States.
While Buhari is expected to take Borno, Taraba and Sokoto States, Jonathan has bright chances in Delta and Edo States, though Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State had alleged the manipulation of the polls in his state, which is controlled by the APC.
Before the announcement of the result from Yobe State where Buhari scored 446,265 and Jonathan 25, 526, the APC presidential candidate had a cumulative vote of 13,314,482.
Jonathan was trailing with 10,840,723.
This made the difference then 2,473,759 in favour of Buhari.
