Striking lecturers at the Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Noforija in Epe, near Lagos have vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.
The Chairman of the union, Michael Adefuye, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos that the decision to continue the strike was reached at the union’s congress on May 3.
Adefuye said the congress decided that the management of the institution must pay at least 75 per cent of the unremitted pension fund and taxes.
He said: “Congress decided that the strike should continue for as long as the management was not ready to meet the union’s demands and commit a reasonable per cent of the outstanding debt.
“The 75 per cent payment as reached by the congress will stand as a commitment from the management to the lecturers.”
The chairman said the management had also invited the union for a meeting, but that the union had requested that the meeting should be re-scheduled.
On April 18, the MOCPED Chapter of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union declared an indefinite strike over the inability of the institution to meet its demands.
The union is demanding payment of over 42 months un-remitted pensions to the institution’s Pension Fund Administrator.
According to the union, sequel to the non-remittance of the fund, the retirement benefits of retired members and deceased staff have not been paid or updated.
It also accused the institution’s management of scrapping the degree programme of the college as well as engaging in financial impropriety.
On April 21, the Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Education pleaded with the union to call off the strike after assuring the workers that the government would increase its subvention to the college this month.
