The National Emergency Management Agency says all children in the four designated Internally Displaced Persons camps in Yola, Adamawa State have been immunised against polio.
Sa’adu Bello, the NEMA Head of Operations in Adamawa and Taraba State, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Monday that this followed the resurgence of Polio cases in neighbouring Borno State.
Bello explained that children from ages zero to five were immunised against wild polio virus.
He said the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and World Health Organisation had conducted series of Polio immunisation in all the IDP camps and out camp settlements in the state.
He said: “What we are witnessing in Borno is connected to the fact that some women and children are just out of Boko Haram captivity and from all indication they were not immunised for long time.
“We in Adamawa, we don’t have any new arrivals at the IDPs camps and those in the camps have all been immunised.
“In fact, the 2016 Adamawa Polio immunisation exercise was launched in Fufore Internally Displaced Persons Camp.”
Bello said the state government and WHO had gone a long way in eliminating the children killer diseases, including polio and measles, in all the designated camps and out camp settlements.
“We do not expect there will be any polio, measles or any related children disease outbreak in our camps in Yola,” Bello said.
He said there was no cause for people to panic as government and relevant agencies were on alert and conduct surveillance periodically.
