One person was feared killed on Wednesday when a container-bearing
trailer crushed his vehicle at the popular Ojuelegba area on Western
Avenue, Lagos.
The trailer, said to be coming from Apapa Wharf axis and heading out
of Lagos, fell off the Ojuelegba Bridge.
The trailer fell on two vehicles, a white Nissan Sunny car with
registration number Lagos DG 750 LND and a Sport Utility Vehicle
(SUV). The container fell directly on the SUV while the impact was
slight on the other.
But while the lone occupant of the Nissan Sunny car was said to have
escaped death, the occupant of the SUV was still trapped under the
container at press time.
A police officer attached to Area ‘C’ Police Command, Surulere, who
preferred anonymity, said efforts were still being made to extricate
the driver of the SUV.
“The occupant of the Nissan Sunny car managed to escape. But we still
do not know whether the driver of the SUV is still alive or not.
“We have sent for a crane to remove the container on the SUV and
rescue the driver. Until that is done, it is not proper to say the
driver is dead,” the officer spoke on phone from the scene of the
accident.
Several commuters and motorists were stranded for several hours
because of the accident, which caused a gridlock.
Most of them came down from their vehicles to have a glimpse of the
accident. They lined up the bridge.
The traffic generated also hampered rescue efforts. Officials of some
emergency agencies said they were held up in traffic.
Earlier in text message, a top official of the Lagos State Fire
Service said firefighters were still on their way to the scene of the
accident.
The message reads in part: “Officials of the Federal Fire Service who
are closer have responded promptly while other responders on are stuck
in traffic presently.
“First-hand information indicates that the only occupant of the white
car escaped while the other occupant of trapped jeep was the only one
in the trapped vehicle under the container. Operations are on to
extricate the trapped driver now.”
