The Ondo State Teaching Service Commission on Thursday suspended four teachers and some students of St. Ambrose Catholic Secondary School, Ondo town.
The Chairman of TESCOM, Dr. Bakkita Bello, made this known during an inspection tour of the school in Ondo West Local Government Area.
Bello said that the suspension followed the absence of the affected teachers and students during the visit.
He said: “By the powers conferred on the commission, we hereby suspend indefinitely the teachers and runaway students who are yet to be seen in the school.
“I want the teachers to report to our headquarters in Akure on Friday, June 6, unfailingly.
“We saw some students running away after sighting us and a lot of unprofessional conducts perpetrated by some teachers in this school.”
Bello said that it was wrong to be absent from school without any just cause, especially with the availability of telephones for easy communication.
According to him, teachers should communicate to heads of departments, principals and vice-principals if they have any cause to be absent.
He said that the state government would not condone indolence and would sanction insincere and lazy workers.
Bello, however, commended employees committed to their work.
The chairman said that honesty and fairness would be considered while promoting teachers.
He urged teachers to see themselves as foster parents, educators and role models.
“Nobody can build society as teachers do,” he said.
The school Principal, Bisi-Bernard Akinreimisi, commended the steps taken by the commission and hoped that it would serve as a deterrent to absenteeism.
