No fewer than 700 eligible Nigerien nationals resident in Kano, Kano State have so far been registered to participate in the forthcoming general election in Niger Republic.
The Deputy Consul of Niger Republic Consulate in Kano, Alhaji Hassane Issa, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Tuesday.
Issa said all the eligible voters would be given voter cards to enable them to cast their votes during the election.
He said: “We have registered over 700 eligible voters in Kano and the voter cards are being issued to them for the February 21 election.
“All male eligible voters must be 18 years of age, unlike their female counterparts, who, once they are married, are qualified to vote, irrespective of their age.”
According to Issa, similar exercise was going on in Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja, where the election would also be conducted.
He explained that the Consulate had yet to decide on the venue of the election in Kano, saying that as soon as the venue was fixed, it would be communicated to the voters.
He said: “We have not decided yet on the venue for the election but it will be announced later.”
Issa called on all Nigerien nationals in Nigeria to come out peacefully and vote for candidates of their choice during the poll.
He said a total of 15 presidential candidates were vying for the exalted seat.
He said: “Initially, there were 16 presidential candidates, but one was disqualified on health ground.”
NAN reports that voters would also elect candidates into the country’s parliament during the poll.
