Enugu federal roads to gulp N26.4b – Onolememen

The Minister of Works, Architect Mike Onolememen, has commissioned the construction and rehabilitation of three federal roads of about 131.5km in Enugu State at the cost of N26.5 billion.
The roads include a brand new 50km road from Ogrute in Enugu State through Umuida and Unadu to Odoru in Kogi State; rehabilitation of a 50km road from Umuna through Ndiagu and Ebenebe to Ezeagu and the rehabilitation of a 31.5km road stretching from Agubuogu through Ebenebe to Iwolo, all in Enugu State.
These roads when completed, the minister said, will link up all the towns and villages along the corridor, increase commercial activities and transportation of agricultural produce between Enugu and Kogi States and beyond.
The roads will also provide alternative routes from the South East and South South Zones to the Northern parts of the country.
The contracts were awarded to Messrs PW Nigeria Limited, Messrs CGC Nigeria Limited and Messrs Coduc Nigeria Limited.
Onolememen added that the Ogrute-Umuida-Odoru Road was in response to the yearnings of the people of Enugu State and the communities on the corridor for democratic dividend and the unceasing demand of the Chairman, Senate committee on Works, Senator Ayogu Eze, who hails from Igbo Eze community while those of Umuna-Ebenebe to Ezeagu and Agubuogu-Ebenebe to Iwolo were credited to the efforts of the Chairman, House Committee on Works, Hon. Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, who hails from Ezeagu community.
Eze and and Ozomgbachi thanked the Federal Government for using the projects to show its commitment to providing infrastructure to the good people along these corridors.
The Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, through his Commissioner for Works, Engineer Godwin Madueke, expressed gratitude to President Goodluck Jonathan for the award of contracts for the roads.
Chime said this demonstrated Jonathan’s commitment at practicalising his economic transformation and empowerment of the people of Enugu State.
He promised to protect and jealously guard the projects as the people’s own so as ensure that they are preserved and maintained for posterity.
The roads are to be delivered in 24 months, 30 months and 18 months respectively.
In a similar development in Imo State, the minister commissioned the construction of 14km Mbaise-Ngwa Road, with a bridge at Imo/Abia States.
The project was awarded to Messrs Mangrovetech and Engineering Nigeria Limited for N2.94 billion.
The project, which is to be delivered in 12 calendar months, is a constituency project in favour of Senator Chris Anyanwu of the Owerri North Senatorial District.
