The Ivorian Football Federation on Thursday in Abidjan said it has hired Frenchman Herve Renard as the new coach of the country’s male national team, the Elephants.
The IFF President, Sidy Diallo, said in a statement that the federation signed a two-year contract with the new coach.
Diallo said Renard had a mandate to ensure that the Elephants qualified for the 2015 African Nations Cup billed to hold in Morocco in January.
Sources close to the IFF told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abidjan on Wednesday that the new coach would earn 32 million CFA (about 49,000 Euros) monthly.
Born September 30, 1968, Renard played for the French national team and was the coach of the Zambian team, which won the 2012 edition of the African Nations Cup.
Renard replaces Sabri Lamouchi, who announced his exit from the team late June after it failed to qualify for the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
NAN reports that the new Elephants coach was chosen from a list of four candidates who emerged finalists from a list of 37 applicants who jostled for the job.
