Members of Unity Forum Senators and their counterparts in the Like Minds Senators group have embarked on marathon meetings over the fate of the embattled President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
While Like Minds Senators vowed to stand with Senator Saraki during his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, the Unity Forum Senators are still insistent on his resignation as the Senate president.
They are indeed mapping out strategies to unseat Saraki.
However, a statement on Monday by the Senate spokesman, Senator Abdulahi Sabi, said the Red Chamber has rejected calls for the resignation of Saraki following the Supreme Court ruling that upheld his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Sabi said this followed the conclusion of a meeting by the senators on the issue.
Sabi said there was no basis for the Senate president to resign, insisting that Saraki’s ordeal was politically motivated and not about any anti-corruption fight.
He said in the statement: “From the beginning of the trial last September, we have declared that this case is not about any fight against corruption. It is simply a case of political vendetta.
“Our position remains the same. We still believe that the case is politically motivated.”
On this ground, Sabi added: “We want to state categorically that there is no basis for the call on the Senate President to resign until after the matter is decided in that final judicial forum. Such a call at this time is premature, mischievous and unwarranted.”
However, the statement failed to mentioned names of the senators that participated in the meeting where the decision was taken.
Investigation revealed that some senators in Saraki’s camp may have decided to shift camp considering the implication of the allegations against him on the Senate’s image.
Last Friday, the Supreme Court rejected Saraki’s appeal against the competence and jurisdiction of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to try him for a 13-count charge of false asset declaration slammed on him by the Federal Government.
