The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps in Ota, Ogun State has urged drivers to ensure proper functioning of their vehicle brakes before embarking on any journey.
The Zonal Commander of TRACE, Ajibade Adekunle, made this plea while speaking with the News Agency of Nigera on Saturday in Ota.
Adekunle said that accidents involving over 60 per cent of articulated vehicles were caused by brake failure.
According to him, the recent increase in the crashes caused by brake failure is worrisome and calls for urgent need to address the problem.
Adekunle warned that there were consequences of improper maintenance of vehicles, especially during the “ember months”.
He said: “There is nothing spectacular about the ember months if the drivers are careful and take all safety precautionary measures.”
The TRACE commander urged drivers to always slow down whenever they get to failed portions of the roads and desist from driving against traffic.
Adekunle said many drivers had been involved in accidents by driving against traffic, urging them to “observe speed limit, fasten seat belts and avoid drinking or smoking while driving”.
He said that ensuring safety on the roads was a collective responsibility of all road users.
Adekunle also implored drivers to desist from indiscriminate parking of vehicles in view of the risk involved.
