The Vice Chancellor University of Jos, Prof. Sabastian Maimako, has said the institution has completed arrangements to honour three eminent Nigerians for their outstanding contributions to national development as it convokes over 7,020 graduands.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed this on Tuesday when he briefed newsmen on activities for the 29th and 30th joint convocation of the school.
Maimako said the authentic number of the graduating students was being computed at various departments and shall be made public drugs the convocation ceremony.
He said what is certain is the conferment of Honourary Degree on three eminent Nigerians.
They include the Chairman/Chief Executive, Bejjeto Group Nigeria Limited, His Royal Highness, Engineer John Mokwol, who would be conferred with Doctor of Engineering Degree Honours causa (D. Engr) for his out standing contributions to the development to the manufacturing sector in Nigeria, among other qualities.
Maimako said retired Inspector General of Police and the immediately past Chairman, Police Service Commission, Sir Mike Mbam Okiro, will be conferred with the Doctor of Law Degree Honour Causa (LLB) for his exemplary conduct and leadership during his career in the Nigeria Police Force.
Also to be conferred with Honourary Doctorate Degree is Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, in recognition to his technological acumen and the innovative and progressional matter the telecoms industry is being transformed under his watch.
Maimako said a pre-convocation lecture would be delivered by Most Rev Mathew Hassan Kukah, the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, on the Topic: “Broken truths: Nigeria’s Elusive Quest for National Cohesion.”
He said the two years of his tenure as the Vice Chancellor had been very eventful, which, according to him, informed his decision to conduct the joint convocation in a grand style.
According to him, the University has a distinguished record of being one of Nigeria’s leading institutions of higher learning, while its students are rated among the best the nation can boast of.
Maimako said: “The University has remained consistent in its quest towards becoming a world class research-intensive institution, developing along the way considerable track record for achieving high standard in teaching research and community services.”
