Team Nigeria will do better at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games than it did at Glasgow – Oreweme

Tayo Oreweme, Director of Federations and Elite Athletes Department at the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, says Team Nigeria will surpass all expectations at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Oreweme told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja that with the level of preparations by Team Nigeria, she was sure that the team would make Nigeria proud.
NAN reports that Nigeria won 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals from eight sports at the 2014 Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
This time around at the 2018 Games at Gold Coast in Australia and billed for April 4 to April 15, Team Nigeria will be featuring in nine sports.
Oreweme said: “Tactically and technically we are ready. We have started preparation since we came back from Glasgow. Immediately after the close of events there, we had began to think of what to do for the next edition.
“We registered for the 2018 Commonwealth Games immediately after the end of the Glasgow Games.
“Then, we had to look at ourselves. How many qualifiers do you have, and how many teams are you going with to Gold Coast?
“The technical part of it is the need to camp the athletes.”
She said Nigeria’s foreign-based athletes spread all over the world are already aware of the ministry’s programmes and they would be around for the final phase of preparations in February.
The FEAD director however warned that no athlete would be allowed to go to Gold Coast without being part of the trials which would hold in February.
She said: “After the end of the 80 days approved for the technical build-up of athletes, all athletes training abroad will come in and then we will pick the final team to Gold Coast.”
