The trial marks the first time in history that a US president is impeached after leaving office.
Twitter banned the outgoing president in the wake of the attack on the US Capitol by a pro-Trump mob last week.
“I want to be very clear: I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week,” Trump said in a video message posted by the White House on Twitter.
Online platforms and social media companies are distancing themselves from, and taking action against, those who encouraged or engaged in last week’s deadly violence on the US Capitol by the president’s supporters.
The Prime Minister replaced the old Twitter banner with the one in which he is being vaccinated against COVID-19.
Describing last week’s assault as an “unprecedented terrorist attack”, Mayor Muriel Bowser said that Biden’s inauguration on January 20 will require a “different approach” compared to past inaugurations.
Shortly after 1pm ET Wednesday hundreds of pro-Trump protesters pushed through barriers set up along the perimeter of the Capitol, where they tussled with officers in full riot gear, some calling the officers “traitors” for doing their jobs.
“The violence and destruction taking place at the US Capitol Must Stop and it Must Stop Now,” Pence tweeted.
“I know your pain, I know your hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us,” Trump said in a one-minute video posted on social media.
