The National Universities Commission had last week directed the outgoing VC to hand over, in acting capacity, to a replacement to be chosen by the university’s Senate between November 30 and December 1
The information was contained in a statement by the VC on Sunday.
The NUC made its position known in a letter dated November 27, 2020 by its Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, to the Pro-Chancellor of the university
It also directed the outgoing vice chancellor to recuse himself from the senate meeting that will decide the eventual winner of the seat.
This is coming on the heels of more withdrawals by candidates who are potential replacements for the incumbent, hinging it on allegations of unfairness.
Their withdrawal from the race was convened to the Deputy Registrar (Senate, Admission and Affiliated Institutions), Morenike F. Afolabi, who was accused of convening the meeting in an impromptu manner.
The BIR boss in a statement made available to newsmen, declared that there was no evidence of shady financial dealings between the BIR and the University of Ibadan or other Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies on the Pay As You Earn tax liability audit process for the periods of 2012 to 2018 and 2019.
The meeting was announced in an invitation to members of the Senate by the university.
In the petition made available to newsmen, the group, headed by Comrade Bala Ayodele, sent it to the Federal Ministry of Education, Department of State Services, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission and the National Universities Commission.
This was contained in a confidential memo sent to all members of the Council.
ASUU-UI Chairman, Ayo Akinwole, said in a statement on Tuesday that the action was in the spirit of the ongoing strike.
The Joint Action Committee of the unions at a press conference held at the ivory tower also denied that they assumed the responsibility of appointing a vice chancellor for the university.
The unions have had divergent opinions on the appointment of a new VC, who is expected to assume office on December 1, 2020.
Briefing journalists after an extraordinary meeting of the Senate on Wednesday in Ibadan, Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose (SAN), said that 188 members of the body in attendance at the meeting also affirmed their confidence in the institution‘s governing council.
The union made its position known in a statement signed by its Chairperson, Ayoola Akinwale, and the Secretary, Chris Omoregie, on Sunday.
Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union and those of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities stormed the Council chambers where the final selection would have been made earlier on Wednesday and disrupted the proceedings.
The suspension of the process followed the crisis that trailed the process on Wednesday
A source told The Eagle Online that a statement announcing the suspension of the process will be issued by the Registrar of the university
Aremu, who made the suggestion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on the #EndSARS protests on Friday in Ibadan, Oyo State, said such certificates should be the least entry requirements into the Nigeria Police Force.
