The bill, titled Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act 2026 (HR 7457), reportedly includes Kwankwaso’s name in connection with the allegations.
He claims Yusuf’s decision to align with the APC and former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje marked a historic betrayal of the political movement that brought him to power.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation as a member of the State Executive Council in a statement posted on his official Facebook account on Monday.
The anticipated engagement comes barely a day after President Tinubu held a strategic closed-door meeting with Kwankwaso’s political protégé and Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the Presidential Villa.
“The NNPP is open to collaborations with sister political parties that have similar ideologies in 2027,” Olaposi stated.
However, NNPP federal legislators have not openly indicated their willingness to defect to the APC along with the governor.
The former two-term governor of Kano State gave the condition when he spoke with his supporters in Kano, the Kano State capital.
Aniebonam, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NNPP, said this in a statement following a fresh crisis in the party.
Speaking via X on Sunday, he said Nigeria remains a sovereign nation whose citizens face security challenges not defined by religion, ethnicity, or politics.
Kwankwaso, who was reacting to his imminent defection to the APC, said he has not made any submission to any party.
The former two-term governor of Kano State made the clarification at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party in Abuja on Thursday.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Oginni Olaposi, made the position of the party known in a statement he issued on Sunday in Lagos.
Governor Yusuf pledged to follow Kwankwaso’s political lead, stating, “wherever he goes politically, his supporters will follow.”
