Local Government Councils in the South East are yet to enjoy financial autonomy in spite of the directive by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, a survey by News Agency of Nigeria has revealed.

Local Government Councils in Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa States are still operating Joint Accounts in spite of the financial autonomy granted them by the Federal Government.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has sent an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari urging him to use his good offices and leadership position to “urgently publish and fully implement the recommendations of the report on financial autonomy of state legislature and judiciary submitted to you in June 2019.”
Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Oyo State Chapter, has lauded the Federal Government for initiating financial autonomy for local governments areas.
