Responding to a letter written to him by Malala Yousafzai, the Co-Founder of the Malala Fund, President Buhari said while he cannot divulge the details of ongoing negotiations to secure the release of the girls due to the sensitive nature of the negotiations, ”rest assured, however, of the doggedness, commitment and sincerity of the Nigeria’s Federal Government towards ensuring the safe return of the Chibok girls, and indeed all others still in captivity”

In his speech to the UN General Assembly, the Nigerian leader after giving account of the effort and challenges confronting his country in the area of security and the fight against terrorism, invited the UN Secretary General to come to the aid of Nigeria on the lingering and complex but delicate issue of securing freedom for the abducted Chibok School girls who have been in the captivity of the Boko Haram for about two years now
