The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities on Monday said it was satisfied with the level of compliance of members with its “sit at home action” as directed by the executive.
The National President of the association, Samson Ugwoke, spoke in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Ugwoke said there would be no going back on the action until government recalled all members of the association that were sacked and stopped further retrenchment.
NAN reports that the association had on December 24, 2015 begun an indefinite strike following the retrenchment of its members in University Staff Schools across the country.
Ugwoke said the strike was going on as planned, describing the removal of staff school workers from the payroll of government as a breach of agreement.
He said: “We have had a meeting with the Minister of Education where we tabled our agitations.
“We were able to discuss with him in detail and placed our arguments clearly before him.
“The minister told us to give him some time to consult with all stakeholders in order to find a lasting solution to the issue.
“On our part, we shall convene an emergency National Executive Committee meeting on January 12 to discuss the update of the strike so far.
“The minister has asked us to suspend the strike while he consults with other stakeholders, arguing that the issue is multifaceted and so needs the input of those directly involved.”
Ugwoke said the association would consider suspending the strike if there was a positive move to address its grievances.
One of the conditions for truce, according to him, is the recall of all sacked members.
Ugwoke urged the government to be sincere in honouring agreements it reached with unions at all times.
He said the association’s stand on the agreement it entered with the Federal Government in 2009 over the issue remained sacrosanct.
