The Senate on Thursday smuggled a Bill seeking to raise Value Added Tax to 7.5 per cent from 5 per cent into Second Reading.
Senators were not provided details of the bill in question and efforts by some Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers to call the attention of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, to the development were blocked.
Senator Binos Yaroe said the consideration of the Bill was against the Senate’s rules.
But Lawan tactically ignored the issue raised by Senator Yaroe.
Leading the debate on the Bill, Senate leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, said it is meant to promote fiscal equity by mitigating instances of regressive taxation.
Abdullahi also said the bill is targeted to reform domestic tax laws to align with global best practices and to introduce tax incentives for investment in infrastructure.
