Pope Francis has chosen “Migrants and refugees challenge us” as the theme for the 102nd World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which would be observed on January 17, 2016.
The Pontifical Council for the Care of Migrants and Itinerant People on Friday announced this in a statement in Vatican City.
It said this was in line with Pope Francis’s desire for every church to be “directly involved” in the exercise.
The council said the Pope also called on churches to see 2016 as Year of Mercy.
It said the Pope urged for the “Jubilee Day” to be celebrated at local as well as national level with the migrants’ and refugees’ participation and the involvement of Christian communities.
It also encouraged parishes and Christian communities to make the most of the Year of Mercy to organise charitable events and reminded them to spread awareness of the migratory phenomenon.
