The police in Oyo State on Monday paraded four suspects in connection with the killing of a member of Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu (Orelope-LP), on July 1.
The outgoing Commissioner of Police in the state, Leye Oyebade, told newsmen the suspects were arrested in their hideouts at Beere area of Ibadan between July 9 and 14.
Oyebade said the suspects were arrested following thorough investigations by the Special Response Team of the Inspector-General of Police and crack detectives of the Oyo State Police Command.
Oyebade said the initial arrest of a 31-year-old suspect, who was found in possession of the victim’s phone, led to the arrest of the principal suspect.
He said the 23-year-old principal suspect confessed to being a member of a four-man armed robbery gang that robbed and killed Aremu in front of his house on the fateful day.
He added: “According to the suspect, they had no prior knowledge of the status of the victim at the time of the act.
“They only intended to rob him of his valuables, but resolved to kill him when they thought he had seen their faces due to a beam from a torch light.”
The commissioner added that the suspect said he was given N40,000 out of the money stolen from the deceased.
The police also paraded two other suspects aged 43 and 20, while three others were declared wanted in connection with the murder.
Oyebade said their arrests and subsequent confession laid to rest insinuations that Aremu’s murder was politically motivated.
He said: “I want to assure the people of the state that no criminal will commit a crime of this magnitude and get away with it.
“We will get the fleeing suspects in no time; Beere is declared a flashpoint.
“Anyone with useful information that could lead to arrest of the criminals at large should please contact the police command.”
Aremu was until his death the Chairman of the Oyo State House of Assembly Committee on Information and Security.
