Senator Iyiola Omisore, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Osun State, has pledged to develop the state’s tourism resources, if he is elected into power on August 9.
Omisore gave the assurance on Sunday while speaking with News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
He noted that the state was blessed with many tourism sites and tourist attractions, which included Osun Osogbo grove in Osogbo, Oranmiyan Staff in Ile-Ife and Olumirin Waterfall in Erin-Ijesa.
He said: “These tourism sites can be transformed into excellent tourist destinations, if they are well-packaged and properly marketed.
“My plan is to make an inventory of all the tourism sites in the state, particularly those recognised by UNESCO, while preparing new sites for global recognition.
“Our eco-tourism sites such as hills and springs, as well as others like zoos and museums will be developed and showcased to the world to attract investors, as part of our efforts to diversify the state’s economy and popularise the state.”
In the area of agriculture, Omisore said that the primary focus of his agricultural policy would be on food preservation and food processing.
“This is because a sizable percentage of the crops, fruits and other agricultural produce, which are currently produced in the state, perish on a daily basis,” he said.
He said that the focus on food preservation and processing would also spur the state’s industrialisation, as his government would encourage the establishment of small-scale industries such as fruit juice industries.
He also said that his government would construct feeder roads in farming communities to ease the transportation problems facing farmers in efforts to convey their produce to towns.
Omisore pledged that if he was elected, his administration would bring greater prosperity to the people of the state by revamping all sectors.
He said: “We will make accountability in governance and commitment to grassroots interests our watchword.
“We will particularly strive to restore the dignity of education.”
He stressed that his administration would restore the quality of education, adding that the management of public schools would be ceded to their original owners, if the people so desired.
Omisore said that if he was elected as the state governor, women, the youth, the aged and people at the grassroots would have equal and fair access to the state’s resources.
“We shall ensure commitment to the freedom of information and transparency with regard to our management of the resources we have at our disposal,” he said.
He said that if he was elected, his administration would give priority attention to education, health, security, gender equality, youth development, employment as well as agriculture and food security, among others.
Omisore urged the citizens of the state to support his vision and mission, aimed at transforming the state through purposeful leadership.
He assured the people that he would never let them down.
