The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri has canvassed for the withdrawal of academic certificates of proven corrupt public and private sector leaders to serve as deterrent to others in a bid to build a corrupt-free society.
Omeri made this call when he received in his office today the Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu who had come to seek partnership with the NOA.
The NOA boss said it is time for us as a nation to look ‘inward and find stiffer penalties’ to discourage leaders from act of corruption, adding that such move would also serve as deterrent to others, while assuring Nigerians that the ‘scourge would soon be defeated by relevant and effective measures.’
In order to promote value driven lives, the DG also called for the establishment of certificate courses in university to certify the character of students and reward those that has excelled accordingly.
Omeri congratulated the new VC of UniAbuja whom he said his appointment was as a result of confidence the President Jonathan had in him. He also urged Adikwu to seize the opportunity of the Agency’s value re-orientation initiative tagged ‘Do the Right Thing: Patriotism and Ethics First which seeks to inject new set of values on managers of government’s organizations.
Earlier, Adikwu said his visit was to find areas of collaboration with the NOA, adding that his school’s Institute for Peace and Democratic Studies could provide platform for ‘mutually beneficial partnership.’
“After incubating on ideas, the institution decided to partner with the Agency. We believe there is no human problem that cannot be solved. It is unfortunate that we don’t see problems as opportunities. Our youths today are very restive; we can jointly collaborate to train and inculcate new values in them,” Adikwu stressed.
