US President Barack Obama has congratulated Nigerians as the country marks its 53rd Independence Day anniversary on October 1.
In a statement issued by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, on Monday from Washington DC, Obama wished Nigerians a “safe and prosperous future”.
The statement said: “A warm friendship connects the Nigerian and American people, reflecting our shared values of democracy, economic growth, security, respect for human rights and the rule of law.”
It described the partnership between both countries as “strong” because of the people-to-people connection.
It quoted a proverb to illustrate the cordial relations between both countries.
The statement said: “If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
The Secretary of State reiterated the American Government’s commitment to deepening relations with Nigeria in the areas of education, jobs and creation of opportunities for all.
