Some Twitter users have reacted to Oloye Akin Alabi’s claim that he will disclose what legislators truly earn when he starts earning it as a member of the National Assembly.
Alabi, who is a House of Representatives member-elect for Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency of Oyo State, stated this on Friday on his Twitter handle: @akinalabi, lamenting that there shouldn’t be any secrecy surrounding a legislator’s pay.
He tweeted: “I don’t know what legislators truly earn until I start earning it. When I start earning it, the whole of Twitter will know. The biggest problem with the salary rumour is because the whole thing is shrouded in secrecy. My belief is that legislators are doing themselves a disservice by being quiet about it. That is what is making people imagine different figures. People will not believe it when legislators themselves say what they earn. The NASS must officially make public what legislators earn public. But as individuals, we can do our part by making it open.”
The incoming lawmaker and also the founder of Nairabet, a betting company, assured his constituency that he will do his best to be transparent in his dealings.
He added: “Transparency helps a lot. People like to be on the know. Even when they are not too cool with what is going on, when they are in the know, they defend you. That I’ve learnt over time.”
However, Twitter followers expressed divergent views concerning the lawmaker’s proposal.
Dare A posted: “Will you post your payslips and all other allowances? Will your colleagues let you?”
Helijah wrote: Oya when should we expect it? May? June? We’re waiting…”
Sam Eba wrote: “Dear @akinalabi, Senator Ben Murray Bruce told us same but guess what…. Please don’t start.”
Unconventional Human Being stated: “It won’t be long till we confirm. Some of us no longer expect much from elected officials.”
However, Alabi also stated that it is not lawmakers that carry out constituency projects but the people being represented who nominate and relevant agencies get it done.
He assured his constituents that he is not in the Green Chamber for the money and he is likely going to invest his own money for the development of his constituency.
