As part of efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people, the Niger State Government has reemphasised that it will embark on massive maintenance of all roads across the state to ensure they are pothole-free for easy vehicular movement.
Making this known to journalists over the weekend, the Managing Director, Niger State Road Maintenance Agency, Engr. Sale Musa Abubakar, called on articulated vehicles to reduce their loads to the stipulated weight so that the roads can last longer or face sanctions.
It should be recalled that the Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, had in June 2015 flagged off “Operation Zero Potholes” in Minna, the state capital.
The programme is expected to cover other major cities as part of efforts of the new administration to improve urban infrastructure in the state.
According to Engr. Abubakar: “We have started work on portion of roads that stretch from Kpakungu toward the Shiroro Road Western Bypass, leading to Chanchaga.
“We will extend this to all local government areas.
“We appeal to the state government to ensure that the weights of the loads being carried by trucks are commensurate with the strength of the roads so that the roads can stand the test of time.
“Any vehicle that violates the law should be sanctioned accordingly.
“If the roads are rehabilitated, they will allow for easy movement of goods and services across the LGAs, thereby boosting the socio-economic status of rural communities.”
Abubakar further commended the state Governor for awarding contracts for the rehabilitation of major roads leading to the state capital.
