Over five communities in Minna, the Niger State capital, have made passionate appeal to the state Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, to, as a matter of urgency, come to their aid as they have been thrown into darkness in the last four months.
Some leaders of the communities – Alhaji Aliyu Usman Mai-Angwa of Gbeganu, John Adams of Kafin Tella, Sam Alfa of Dutsen Kura Gwari and Mallam Baba Umaru, who is the Wakilin Nupawa – made the appeal over the weekend in Minna.
They said the social and economic activities of these communities have been paralysed since the transformer for their areas broke down.
Usman stated: “The area has suffered a set back economically as businesses have been hampered and at night people live in fear of insecurity because of darkness.”
He said that the 500KV transformer the community has was donated by Hajiya Jumai Jafaru, the House of Assembly member representing Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger state, stressing that the recent SURE-P intervention of 300KV to a part of the area was well appreciated but urged the state government and relevant agencies to come to their aid as a larger part of the community remain in darkness.
Adams, while appealing to the governor, attributed the breakdown of Kafin Tella transformer to overloading due to massive development in the area in recent times.
Sam however said Dutsen Kura Gwari has a 850KVA transformer but that installation is the challenge faced by the community.
Chinyere, Obi a business woman in the area, noted: “We know that the chief servant sympathizes with women in every sphere of life, especially for their self reliance.
“Most shops here are owned by women for their different businesses,.
“Please, make Talba assist us with a transformer.
“I know he will give us if he knows about our problem in this area.”
Another businessman, Isah Mahmud, a barber and salon owner, said: “We are in serious problem because of the generator that we are use.
“We find it difficult to make profits.
“We want the government to assist us with a transformer because the one we had is condemned.
“We have contributed over N300,000 to repair it but to no avail.”
