The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has expressed concern over the recent suspension slammed on the Nigeria Football Federation by FIFA, alleging government interference in an internal crisis within the country’s football family following a court injunction.
In a statement by the Secretary General of the National Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Andrew Aba, the sports writers said they believe the country is trying to calm some already frayed nerves.
SWAN said after the country had been booted out of the ongoing World Cup in Brazil, it strongly believes that there is no better time than now to address the needful in this regard.
At the same time, SWAN said it will not support and/or encourage contempt.
It said while the ‘Statutes’ is held in high esteem, Nigerians too should guard jealously the laws of the land.
Aba added: “Sports only excel within the confines of law and order in any country.
“SWAN therefore urges the National Sports Commission as the country’s sports governing body not to leave any stone unturned in mediating towards ensuring the return of peace to the football family. This is not happening to Nigeria for the first time afterall.
“We also hope that the emissaries sent to the world football ruling body to present the true situation of the crisis will find a headway so as to repel any administrative lapses that will create room for another crisis in future.”
