New political parties can contest Anambra’s governorship election – Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Tuesday in Abuja said that the newly registered political parties were free to field candidates for the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
Jega told News Agency of Nigeria that the commission had critically viewed the laws and “as long as they can meet the regulations, they are eligible”.
“We have looked at the laws and with the current time table, the party is free to field in candidates,” he said.
INEC on Friday registered two new political parties, the Independent Democrats and the Peoples Democratic Movement, in addition to the approval of the All Progressives Congress.
With structures in place and with the ability to conduct primaries, congresses and make nominations in compliance with the legal provisions, then they could contest the election, Jega said.
He said the extent to which the parties could comply with the laid down rules were the main issues.
