The Senate President, David Mark, went philosophical as he agonized over the gruesome murder of 29 students and a teacher at the Government Secondary School, Mamudo, near Potiskum in Yobe State at the weekend, by gunmen believed to belong to the Boko Haram sect.
An angry Senator Mark stated: “Even in war situations, children and women are protected.
“Killing children is akin to cutting down the future of a people.
“This is inhuman, barbaric and unacceptable to any right thinking member of the society.
“For no reason, the lives of these promising children were needlessly cut down by the heartless people.
“This cannot be a way of life.
“Enough of these bloodshed.”
Senator Mark quoted from the Holy Bible to drive home his point that children deserve the protection and care no matter the circumstances.
Specifically, he said Mathew 18:10 states: “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my father which is in heaven.”
From Mark 9:42, he added: “And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a milestone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea.”
He frowned that the perpetrators have committed crime against God and humanity, saying: “This is barbaric, wicked and condemnable.”
He therefore urged the security operatives to step up their surveillance and monitoring activities to halt the trend and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Senator Mark assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would continue to give priority attention to appropriation to security operatives to carry out their duties without hitches .
He sympathized with the government and people of Yobe State, especially the bereaved families, over the unfortunate incident, just as he pleaded with the perpetrators of the heinous crimes to give peace a chance.
Senator Mark pointed that the government has opened enough windows for dialogue and peace, which any aggrieved persons and groups could take advantage of and end terrorism in the land.
