Hope to consider the report on the North East Development Commission stalled on Tuesday due to disagreement on the headquarters and funding of the Commission in the region among the senators.
Consideration for the passage of the Bill had begun with the reading of the report of the Commission by Senator Abdul-Aziz Nyako.
However, the trouble started when Senator Aliyu Wakili said the commission’s headquarters should be sited in Bauchi State.
But Wakili was quickly countered by Senator Garbai Babakaka.
Babakaka said the people of Borno State have suffered so much from insurgence and therefore deserves to have the headquarters of the commission.
The matter resulted into serious argument among the senators from the North East region before the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, intervened.
Saraki, while speaking on the matter, decided to select six senators from the region and resolve the issue on the location and funding.
Members of the committee, which is expected to report back in one week, are Senators Sam Egwu, Emmanuel Paulker, Abdulazeez Nyako, Aliu Wamako, Dino Melaye and Tayo Alaosadura
Saraki had said: “Out f 26 clauses, two clauses are clearly issues of comments, which are the sites and issue of funding.
“Let us give another chance on the issue of funding on site and funding.
“I suggest that because it is a national matter, we take one senator from each of the geopolitical zones to look at the matter, including the two chairmen, which are Paulker and Nyako.”
