The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Lagos State University Chapter on Friday said it would commence an indefinite strike on Monday.
Saheed Oseni, the Chairman of the chapter, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the decision was taken at the union’s congress.
Oseni said the Lagos State Government and the institution’s management had failed to meet the union’s demands since it suspended its strike on January 13.
NAN reports that SSANU-LASU had on May 16 issued the management a week ultimatum to meet its demands or face a strike.
The union had gone on strike in September 2013 and suspended it on January 13 after the government pledged to meet its demands.
SSANU had demanded the implementation of the 2011/2012 staff promotion, which it said was pending due to the “No Vacancy, No Promotion” policy of its management.
It also demanded the implementation of the 65-year retirement age for its members and the reversal of the hike in school fees.
Oseni said the representatives of the state government had promised to meet the union’s demands at a meeting held by both parties in September 2013.
He said: “The government had, through its representatives, requested that we submit the list of staff members who are yet to be promoted, to act on it and direct the management to finance it.
“The union had sent the list since December 5, 2013 but nothing has been done.”
Oseni said that the management was not giving the issues enough attention, as no effort was made to invite the union for dialogue since it gave an ultimatum last week.
According to him, all administrative activities by members of the union will be withdrawn until all the demands are met.
“Just like ASUU has withdrawn its academic responsibility, we have also decided to withdraw our administrative duties in the university until our demands are met,” he said.
In his reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Kayode Sutton, said that efforts were on to resolve all pending issues with the union.
NAN also reports that the SSANU-LASU strike is coming on the heels of that of Academic Staff Union of Universities, LASU Chapter, which started on May 20.
