A Lagos lawmaker, Bisi Yusuff, on Friday donated a large consignment of Albendazole tablets for the deworming of over 600,000 children in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, received the donation on behalf of the state government.
NAN reports that the donation was made through the lawmaker’s Prince of Hope Foundation and Vitamin Angels of USA.
Yusuf said: “I donated 1,000,000 nits of this de-worming drugs and tablets last year and this year, I am donating 1,200,000 to expand the reach.
“As I promised last year, the gesture will continue every year as the economic hardship bites harder, preventing many from going to hospital.’’
He expressed his commitment to improving the healthcare of children in the state.
He said: “I am doing it for the people of Lagos State and my foundation will continue to render help to the people, especially the downtrodden.’’
According to him, the 2015 donation reached 500,000 children while the 2016 edition is expected to reach 600, 000 children in the state.
Yusuff added that over 300 people benefitted from his Foundation’s 2016 free health mission of four-day free surgical operations in hernia, lumpectomy, ganglion, goitre and keloids, among others.
He said that over 30,000 people benefitted from the free diabetes, hypertension, malaria, HIV, dental, hepatitis B, and eye screening, including free vaccination and distribution of free glasses.
The lawmaker said that the foundation would continue to collaborate with other donor agencies so that healthcare delivery would not be left in the hands of the government alone.
He urged the state government to ensure that the drugs reached the target audience, especially those in the rural and riverine areas of the state.
Receiving the donation, the commissioner commended the lawmaker and the foundation for supporting the efforts of the government to improve healthcare services in the state.
Idris said: “Many people are working to complement the efforts of government. We assure you that what is given us will be used to the best of our ability.”
According to him, the government wants to change the landscape of health services in the state by introducing a Health Insurance Scheme and urged residents to key into the scheme.
