The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Ganiyu Sopeyin, on Monday decried the illegal and unauthorised use of public schools’ land by traders and artisans.
Sopeyin, who spoke during an inspection tour of some schools, described the practice as an environmental nuisance and a breach of public order.
He warned the illegal occupants that it was not going to be business as usual as the state government was determined to make public primary schools more conducive for qualitative education.
He directed all illegal occupants to vacate government properties within seven days or face eviction by the state environmental task force team.
Sopeyin said: “I wonder why traders and artisans should constitute themselves as environmental nuisances without considering the grave consequences of their action.
“They leave the private schools to flourish and be beautiful at the detriment of government-owned and controlled schools.
“I direct all illegal occupants to, within seven days, leave government properties; failure of this may force the board to invite the state environmental task force team to do the eviction.
“All illegal structures that the traders are constructing are hindering the flow of water.”
Sopeyin also said government would no longer tolerate wastage in primary schools, adding that inspection exercises would be continuous.
The Chairman was on the tour alongside some board members and management staff of some primary schools.
Some of the schools visited include the Gbagada Primary School, Gbagada, Ajidagan Primary School, Gbagada and Layi Oyekanmi Primary School in Mushin.
